Trump V. Andersen 2024: Governmental Showdown?
August 28, 2024 03:30 PM
On January 6, 2021, politics in the United States fundamentally changed. In the waning days of his presidency and upon the verification of the 2020 election, Donald J. Trump employed divisive and anti-democratic rhetoric, inciting protests that swept through the streets of Washington D.C. Most notably, demonstrators converged on the Halls of Congress, engaging in riotous behavior to voice their grievances and denounce what they perceived as a ‘stolen election’.

What's Old is Old: Presidential Candidates Age and Public Perception
March 07, 2024 02:55 PM
As the nation prepares for yet another presidential election matchup between Donald Trump and Joe Biden–a scenario where the two oldest presidents ever elected to first terms face off against each other again–it's hard not to notice that the average age of our candidates seems to be creeping higher and higher. That President Biden and former President Trump are both well into their early eighties and late seventies, respectively, begs the question: are we stuck with old geezers as the only viable options for leading the free world?

A Renovation to Education
February 13, 2024 05:00 PM
On the first day of my Constitutional Law class, someone asked the professor if she thought there were too many lawyers and if the field was oversaturated. One of her remarks in response to the question struck me. She said that as a rule of thumb, she would just never recommend obtaining a graduate degree where the costs incurred were greater than the earnings would be in the first year in the workforce post graduation. Advice like this seems like solid, standard practice financial advice, but the idea that there are circumstances in which formal education might not be worth the cost turned my mind to higher education broadly, and the debts we occur in its pursuit.

Evaluating Religious Freedom through the Lens of Holiday Greetings
February 12, 2024 01:35 PM
The beloved holiday season is upon us, bringing with it a heightened sense of service, love, giving, and coziness. In the mix of such delightful spirits and feelings, all of us encounter what seems to be an inescapable bombardment of holiday greetings on signage outside of buildings, emails from your favorite brands, and in every interpersonal engagement. This festive cacophony often sparks conversations about the appropriateness of holiday greetings in our diverse and pluralistic society; the seemingly innocuous phrase "Happy Holidays" has emerged as a compromised attempt at being inclusive and culturally sensitive. However, beneath this linguistic shift lies a broader societal question–one that delves into the intricate relationship between the separation of church and state and the preservation of moral principles that have long guided our societal landscape legally, morally, and culturally. As we navigate this discourse, it becomes clear that the conversation extends beyond mere semantics; it is a reflection of our collective effort to strike a balance between diversity and the foundational values that bind us together.

Feminism vs. Femininity: The Battle of Womanhood
February 12, 2024 08:59 AM
Embracing the spirit of the autumn season, I took to watching Gilmore Girls and recently finished the series that follows Rory’s life from high school through college as she navigates her relationships with family, friends, lovers, and her own ambition. A pivotal moment comes in the final episode, where watchers find Rory rejecting a marriage proposal from her college boyfriend so she can pursue her own journalism career. Her place, she believed, was in the professional world–marriage and the traditional family life would prove to be a distraction and disadvantage. This decisive juncture in the show serves a compelling entry point for a broader discussion about the nuanced narratives surrounding women’s roles and the feminist movement.

College Football and Consumerism
February 09, 2024 01:27 PM
What do you think of when you hear University of Alabama? Many Americans will first think: football, Roll Tide, Coach Nick Saban. What about Gonzaga? One’s mind probably turns to basketball; their only exposure to the “Zags” may be March Madness. What is less commonly known is that University of Alabama has achieved R1 status of Doctoral Universities, with very high research activity, or that Gonzaga’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Program is top 10% in the nation. While college sports are closely followed, supported and funded, these academic metrics often remain unknown and overlooked. But isn’t the purpose of university to gain education and prepare for professional pursuits and lifelong careers?
