“Keep America Great!” “Restore the Soul of America!” We see these slogans everywhere. Many pundits and pollsters are seeking to influence your vote in the presidential election through social media, news media, advertisements, campaigns, polls, flyers, and other outlets. Those you spend your time with also influence your thoughts and opinions, whether you recognize it or not. But have you ever considered foreign influences trying to sway you in one direction or another? Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, William Evanina, states, “We are all in this together as Americans. Our election should be our own. Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy.” (1) But who exactly are these “foreign efforts?”
Oftentimes, we are so wrapped up in the politics of our own country, we forget that other countries are concerned with our nation’s policies as well. Because the U.S. is so involved in foreign affairs and international relations, our country’s decisions have far-reaching effects on other governments. Not only is our own country extremely concerned about the upcoming election, but so are many others. In particular, Russia and China.
But what’s in it for them? Well, there is no doubt that Trump being reelected as president will benefit Russia. Jennifer Rubin explained this scenario with a recent op-ed in the Washington Post. “…After all, Russian President Vladimir Putin has gotten much of what he wants from Trump: delegitimization of Western democracies, a pass on bounties on U.S. troops, frayed relations within NATO, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany, and cover for Putin’s interference in our 2016 elections.” (2) It is well known that in 2016, Russia greatly interfered with the presidential election to help elect Donald Trump. Not only was Russia in support of Trump in 2016, but they also strongly opposed Joe Biden’s efforts while he served as Vice President. Because of his influential role in policies passed by the Obama administration specifically relating to Ukraine and his support for the anti-Putin opposition occurring inside Russia at the time, understandably, Russia’s support for Trump and opposition for Biden still continue today. Intelligence officials also warn that Russia’s executive branch, the Kremlin, is “using a range of measures to primarily denigrate former Vice President Biden and what it sees as an anti-Russia ‘establishment.” Russian officials are “spreading claims about corruption” to try to “undermine” Biden and the Democratic Party.” (3)
So what about China? What’s their stance and influence? In an official statement, Director Evanina explained, “We assess that China prefers that President Trump — whom Beijing sees as unpredictable — does not win reelection.” China is very critical of the US’ response to the coronavirus pandemic, along with many other policies and practices. “China has consistently criticized the administration’s statements and actions on Hong Kong, TikTok, the legal status of the South China Sea, and China’s efforts to dominate the 5G market.” Clearly, China prefers Joe Biden to President Trump.
In the end, it is up to us to make our own decisions on who we will vote for in this historical and life-changing election. We must all make sure to properly educate ourselves, and beware of any foreign interference or influences constantly surrounding us. Most importantly, vote for who you believe will influence not only our country but our world, for good.
